Barfly on the Wall: The Cabin Pub and Grub

I will admit I was a bit hesitant to try out The Cabin: Pub and Grub on 14th and Hulman. The exterior, although it definitely reflects the name, has a kind of stockade effect that felt less than welcoming and made me see it as a shady spot. However, on assignment, I stopped by the other night and was pleasantly surprised. The cozy inside makes up for the sketchy exterior for sure. Decent prices, a jovial atmosphere, and a friendly bartender made the place more “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” than “Shootout at the OK Corral.”

As we walked through the door, I could immediately tell that this was primarily a regular’s bar but it lacked the kind of hostility to newcomers some regulars bars tend to give off. The décor is rustic and inviting, with a fireplace in the corner and all the essentials that make for an entertaining bar experience: pool table, darts, and jukebox. Although the space is not large, seating is plentiful, and the bar is a good size. Because the bar was crowded, we sat at a table next to it. Surprisingly, the bartender came to our table with a welcoming smile, saving us the awkwardness of ordering over or between people.

A couple of other amenities stood out to us, making it apparent we had underestimated this establishment.

We tried the breaded mushrooms and cheddar munchers on the late night menu. Both were average bar food but their winningly low price tag made them totally acceptable. Service was speedy and efficient. A couple of other amenities stood out to us, making it apparent we had underestimated this establishment. We noticed the back patio has two heaters that are installed on the overhang above. It costs 25 cents for five minutes of heat. This is a great idea for the bar. It means that if no one is outside, energy is not being wasted, and the business is not incurring an unnecessary cost.

The bar also uses some of their televisions to advertise drink specials and upcoming events at The Cabin. Great idea! If you are looking for a place to watch sports or a place to relax with friends then this bar fits the bill. I definitely misjudged it and will certainly be back. The Cabin: Pub and Grub is located on Hulman and 14th. Their hours are Mon-Thurs 11am-2am, Fri 11am-3am, Sat 12pm-3am, and Sun 12pm-2am. Lunch is served from 11am-2pm. Their full menu and drink specials are online, along with a calendar of live music performances. The website is helpful and easy to navigate. Don’t be put off by the exterior; The Cabin is definitely a place you should check out for a small bar feel and a great experience.
